Zara

From Sidewalks to Catwalks

Nowadays, shops are sometimes so quick in copying garments from the runways that the copied clothes are on the racks even before the original version is ready to be sold. To avoid that kind of competition, some designers, like Tom Ford this year, choose to present their collection to a restricted audience, and no photos are allowed. There is a thin line between taking inspiration, imitating, or copying. This feature will show you a few of the most striking examples of fashion "adaptations".

"What's good enough for Miss Chung is good enough for us, right?! Ever since she was spotted with the gorgeous, yet useful leather goodie on her arm, we all wanted to have it. And to be honest, I have also fallen for the 'I couldn't care less' yet amazingly styled look this bag radiates. But unfortunately, a lot of us don't have the wallet of Alexa.. I think these knock-offs show that you can have that same look for (a lot) less money, but without looking cheap. The leather has a genuine look and the best apart about this bag is; the more you use it, the better it will look. Basically, you can't go wrong with either the real- or almost real deal!"

Burberry prorsum boots

"All it took was a single image by Mr. Newton to put these shearling beauties on the radar, not to mention every blog imaginable! Though luckily, I didn't have to look very far to find the next best thing: New Look's Buckle Boots! For me, the buckles and trimming are the perfect compromise between the two luxury originals. Although they're a showstopper on the streets, I think I'll leave them for the show and take their New Look twins!"

"I personally loved the Vivienne Westwood pirate boot so no cheaper alternative would ever compare. It's great to be inspired by other designers, and even offer a budget alternative to a high fashion piece, but in my mind wearing a direct imitation would feel like an injustice to Vivienne Westwood and would just never be the same."

"The Celine trapeze skirt is gorgeous and perfect for any season, I believe this is the reason that made it become one of the most wanted and must-have pieces. I usually don't like copies but in this case I'd rather call it 'inspiration' because, as we can see, the pieces are different in details, so I'm ok with it. Not everyone can afford the prices of high fashion or haute couture and it's nice to have a second and cheaper version/option to buy that piece of clothing that's becoming the fashion trend of the moment, I guess everyone has the right to wear that, and that's what those brands (like Zara) are trying to do. Of course, for the lower prices, the quality is also low, but in most of the cases it's not that bad actually, so I prefer the cheap version. I have some pieces in my closet that are 'inspirations' from famous and expensive brands and they are good quality as well. So, if it's not a full perfect identical copy (which I don't like), I'm totally fine and supportive with it."

"It's obvious that a lot of catwalk trend find their way to the high street shops. Because the consumer indirectly ask for a cheaper version of it. When I look at the shearling aviator jackets without looking at the price, I think the Burberry prorsum shearling aviator jacket will still be my favorite. But due to the high price I'm forced to buy a cheaper version, unfortunately."

"I much prefer the original ones, I adore those shoes, my favorites no doubt, specially the ones I have got, the 'Pony wedges'.

I own 3 pairs of Finsk wedges and I can assure you that the quality is excellent, which you cant always say for the replicas. Of course I understand that the replicas are much cheaper but if you can, I would recommend to buy the original wedge, you wont regret it, these shoes are show stoppers!"

"Unless it's halloween, these type of boots are permanently on my 'will never buy' list. However, I do fully appreciate the tough, raw & edgy vibe these statement shoes have to them, even if they are something I would never consider purchasing."

"I am of two minds about knock-offs. I believe that direct copying for profit is unethical, and don't support it. That said, ever since there have been "designer" items, there have been those looking for something similar at a price they can afford. Taking inspiration from an exclusive designer style and reinterpreting it for the masses is how fashions evolve, and that is a good thing. Without those reinterpretations, we wouldn't have fashion as we know it today.
I'm not a fan of the original Chloe wedge boot. I prefer my form to match my function, and I don't see myself hiking up the mountain in wedges... but I do like the Zara wedges that take inspiration from them in material, but tighten them up to a less-fussy fashion statement that is still casual. The other look, with khaki and leather seem more like reinterpretations than knock offs, and are fine by me, but not my style."
