Mixing Prints & Patterns

According to the old school style rules, combining patterns and prints could end in a fashion disaster! However, with a bit of creativity and thought behind the look, mixing patterns with prints can be incredibly stylish and has become a top trend of 2010.

The problem with fashion and trends is that we can all end up adopting the same look, but with this theme, you can be as expressive and unique as you like and it’s a great way of conveying your mood and personality!

On the catwalks we have seen Breton stripes mixed with floral prints and even animal prints teamed with clashing patterns. Just make sure that your outfit is broken up with a few matching accessories which will help to emphasise the effect of the patterns and prints and pull the look together in a ‘done but undone’ fashion.

Our featured HYPEED contributors have demonstrated some incredibly stylish and unique ways of mixing patterns with prints ranging from a more subtle take on the theme with the use of patterned and printed accessories or opting for overstated, bold and fashionably daring!

Our cover guy Jake shows how a combination of patterns and prints can make a strikingly smart ensemble.

He has used the theme to convey his love of the 1950's rock 'n' roll and high school style but adds a subtle, contemporary twist.

"Between college and rock' n' roll, the atmospheres of the years of the Boom are back because the world of the High School in the Fabulous Fifties is still inspiring the world of the road. The Danny Zucko's leather jacket is now mixed with vichy-pattern shoes and the shirts. Switching to white, red and black."

Elza B. has gone for a pretty, demure and feminine combination of patterns and prints and shows how it can be incorporated into an everyday look.

The leopard print detailing of the cardigan and horizontal stripes of the skirt adds striking interest to the overall outfit.

Adenorah demonstrates how a Breton striped tee works amazingly contrasted with a floral print.

"As this outfit dates back from last summer, I can assert that the floral motive and the stripes are here to stay and that they will still be in this summer! I think that you should not be afraid of mixing powerful prints because the result is often successfull!"

Keep accessories simple to maximise the pattern and print effect...

The pattern and print look works great when separated with block pieces such as the military green H&M skirt as worn by MochaSoyWhippy.

The studded belt also adds an edge to the feminine look, making it more visually interesting.

Buscando in mi Armario keeps the look statement for maximum effect with one patterned piece and one printed...

...by adding accessories that match a colour as seen in the print of the skirt, this nicely pulls the look together.

The mixture of patterns and prints is kept simple but is a strong statement!

Plus, when you're wearing a Chanel scarf, you can never go wrong!

Ultra Chic!

Proof that the leopard print coat really does work with anything! The coat looks incredible teamed with the vibrant blue tones as seen in Stacey's blazer and printed H&M shirt.

"This is my favorite blazer of the moment. I especially like the golden buttons".

Annie has combined her summery prints with a vintage black leather skirt which pulls the look together and finishes with highly on-trend spot patterned tights.

A stylish mixture of contemporary and vintage patterns and prints!

Elvez works the 80's rock chic look combining a statement printed tee with a leopard print mini!

The black tights and dark heeled shoes keep the focus on the two main pieces of the ensemble for maximum impact.

The vampy red lips work perfectly with the 'rock chic' take on patterns and prints!

Valeria demonstrates how the brown tones featured in the floral patterned skirt and contrasting animal print belt are perfect for this look and should be used more...

..."brown is a VERY underrated color, and there are millions of looks that you can create with it. So dare to mix and play with fashion!"

The plain white vest emphasises the contrasting pattern of the skirt and the print of the belt.

A highly wearable but striking look!

Go with what your style mood tells you. If you feel great wearing it, you'll also look great!

"These photos were taken during a trip in London with my boyfriend. I was so glad to be somewhere people don't mind about the way you dress!!"

The cropped leopard print coat breaks all the style rules and looks incredible teamed with contrasting nautical stripes.

The neutral black scarf and black bag pulls the outfit together and keeps the attention focused on the pattern and print.

"Today I woke up with a feeling of freedom, more than usual. I woke up and picked nice clothes, which have nothing to do with each other but eventually I wanted to wear what I like. Today I got up earlier loving me more than usual and I love how it looks."

The mixture of patterns and prints can be used to lift your mood or as a way of expressing how you feel!

Sometimes, mixing items that you think won't work together can achieve the exact opposite as demonstrated by Lorenz!

Elora works the combination of a floral print with a stripy pattern for a laid back, chic and summery look.

The brown accessories compliment the blue tones of the patterns and prints and add a trend inspired, hardened edge to the soft, feminine ensemble.

The use of accessories as demonstrated by Sher, allows you to experiment with patterns and prints and you can therefore be as bold or as understated as your style mood desires!

The contrast of the animal print scarf and belt looks super stylish teamed with the Breton striped top.

Keeping the black and white tones consistent throughout the combination of patterns and prints also shows how this theme can be smart, versatile and wearable!
