Music & Me

It seems obvious that fashion and music are intrinsically linked.

How many singers have set a trend? How many stylists have influenced music artists?

I'm thinking for example about Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm Mc Laren's shop, Sex, on King Road in the 1970s. Not only were Vivienne's clothes influenced by punk music, but punk artist like The Sex Pistols regularly shopped there for inspiration.

It's definitely a two way street! Lots of iconic singers had such a unique style that it became inseparable from their music: Madonna, Cindy Lauper, Michael Jackson, and, more recently Lady Gaga! Would the latter be so successful without her crazy outfits and eccentric hairdos?

It's almost a matter of "tell me what you listen to, I'll tell you what you wear"!

Now, our members illustrate that connection between fashion and music each in their own way. A certain song inspired some of them to wear such or such an outfit. Some others rather showed their musical taste with a shirt of their favorite band. Eventually, some HYPEED members chose to pose with their instruments, which became the final accessory of their outfits.

Turn the sound up, these photos have to be watched with good music in your ears!

Slanelle

Camille says she would typically wear this outfit to a rock concert. I bet she would even rock the stage with her Topshop heels and Marc Jacobs bracelet !

Dylana's jacket is the best link between fashion and music : it evokes music idols like the king of pop himself, Michael Jackson ! And he sure was a fashion icon as well !

Lorenz rocks our partner Yaz's shirt with high heels, contrasting with the soft pink color.

There is a nice story behind this picture. This is what Victoria has to say :

"For the longest time I have wanted to play a musical instrument. The first instrument I ever played was the violin. I have been thinking about picking it back up again, but unfortunately when I was given the opportunity to borrow this violin, I had no resin for my bow, so no sound comes out of it. As a child it sounded more screechy, so perhaps this is better for the audience. In time I hope that I can play the violin on a regular basis, with sound. The outfit was handmade by Jitterbuggin' of etsy.com. It is a 1940s sailor shirt with two red stars on the back collar and a blue jumper. The shoes are from remix vintage. I did the hairstyle, which normally I have long hair, but I know tricks to make it faux short."

When I asked Bella about this photoshoot, she told me : "The composition of music among a list of favorite artists definitely plays a role in the aesthetics of style and mood. Hotel parties, guitar lessons, and layering a mass of key pieces for a 70's-chic meets wandering metal head rock concert... I think it's about liberating the pandering of a self-proclaimed, "I am who I am and nothing else should be an enforced requirement upon my individuality."

Well, well, look who's there ! It's me, Slanelle ! Music definitely plays a big part in my life, as i love to sing and play the guitar or the ukulele with my friends. I think music is what brings us together !

Elise looks so boheme in her Naf Naf dress (she went through 7 Naf Naf shops before finally finding it). She confesses that she was really happy to participate in this theme, because music is all her life. She plays the guitar, the ukulele and the harmonica !

Morgane once again proves her creativity: she made those brooches herself from violins she had bought at a flea market! What a clever way to have a unique accessory!

11 years old Evita may be a kid, but she's not kidding when it comes to fashion and music! She has played lots of instruments, like guitar, drums and piano, and she would love it if she could make a career in music:

"For me music is something I can't live without! I played almost all instruments piano, guitar, drum you named it I played it! something else that I can't live without is my ipod! the best invention ever. If someone suddenly offering me to be a music artist this is probably i would look like, and based on my look my music will sound a lil bit synthpop I guess, with happy lyrics and rhyme."

"The theme was 'if i were a boy' because since i changed my hair (it was too long before), i feel like a beautiful boy sometimes:) The boy i turned into is a cool, stylish rocker boy, so the music is a part of his life and my life too :) I love taking these big headphones everywhere with me cause music is indispensable for me"

looks wonderfully androgynous with her white shirt - bow tie combo.

Amy is inspired by 60s rock and folk music. She says:

"Innate bohemian style must come from the music I grew with. Janis, Garfunkel, Grace Slick, Crosby Stills and Nash, Stones, Joni.... these were the poets that created the rhythms I have moved in sync with. These photos are taken in the studio, where favorite vintage album covers are collected and hung all around; ideal for creative spurts."
